The SDSBVI provides a full academic program, kindergarten through high school, with special emphasis given to adapting teaching materials and teaching methods to meet the needs of visually impaired students. The curriculum blends academic coursework and practical skills to enable our students to attain maximum independence. We offer coursework in independent travel, Braille, activities of daily living, low vision utilization, use of specialized equipment, and preparation for employment. Each student has an IEP that addresses educational and social needs as well as disability-specific needs. The Functional Skills Program is designed for students with one or more additional handicapping conditions, this curriculum presents materials in small, sequential steps. Each individually designed program focuses on daily living and self-help skills, pre-vocational skills, functional academics, communication and social/leisure-time skills.

The United Retirement Center Avera was built in 1959 with funds received from a Hill Burton Grant and donations from thousands of individuals living in and around Brookings County. In 1989, an additional 21 beds were built. Today the total number of licensed nursing home beds to 79. In 1991, congregate living apartments known as Park Place Apartments opened to serve the independent resident. With the addition of these apartments, URC Avera expanded its services to the Brookings Community. In 1999, Park Place Assisted Living opened its doors to 36 individuals. Again the United Retirement Center Avera set the standard of care in the Brookings Community. URC Avera is licensed by the South Dakota Department of Health as a skilled nursing facility and is certified for Medicaid and Medicare funding. It is a non-profit corporation operated under the direction of the 9-member Board of Directors who are elected from the corporate membership to serve 3-year teams.

Our Finley Road home is located in the Ballston Spa area. For the 12 men and women who live there, they enjoy being very active members of their community. They have busy schedules that include taking music lessons, volunteering at the 4-H Unlimited Garden, visiting friends and family and attending special events in the community. In particular, the individuals enjoy picnics, fairs, music festivals, and dinner outings, concerts, vacations and of course shopping. They are sports fans as well as athletes and look forward to participating in Special Olympics. Their pride in their home is evident for they are involved and responsible in its care. This bodes well because they love having company especially during the holidays. The busy group of gregarious socialites is always on the go and delighted to plan the next activity.

Six men and women live in the Middle Grove Road home, which is located in the very quiet, country setting of Middle Grove. It is a large dwelling that features a living room, a music room, and a wonderful 3 season room off of the kitchen area. The individuals have placed several bird feeders surrounding the property. They enjoy watching out for different species and are responsible for making sure that they have plenty of food. The group loves to go out to eat at restaurants, stopping off for ice cream and shopping. Many days are filled with Special Olympic activities including bowling, basketball, volleyball, softball, swimming, and ice skating. During the summer months they take an annual vacation, spend time at the parks, have picnic adventures, go fishing, and spend time at a friend’s farm.

Our Squashville Road home is located on a country road in the town of Greenfield Center near the Kaydeross Creek. Four ladies and one gentleman live in this large ranch which features two living rooms and a spacious eat-in kitchen, with an island in the middle. Situated on 3 wooded acres, the screened-in gazebo in the backyard provides a tranquil setting for the individuals to relax, admire the many beautiful flowers and watch out for local wildlife including bunnies, deer and even a raccoon. They fill the birdfeeders and wait to see what a type of bird comes to eat. Other activities they enjoy are hanging out, listening to music and watching TV. When they venture into the community, the group loves to go out to eat, eating ice cream, shopping at Wal-Mart, Target or anywhere in the mall. During the warmer months, they enjoy going on picnics, to concerts and spending time in Lake George.
