Massage has been proven to reduce pain, but a recent article proved that massage works even when modern medicine fails. Fibromyalgia is a condition of chronic pain that is notorious for being unresponsive to even the most potent pain medications. A study published in the March 2005 issue of the Clinical Journal of Pain compared a group of patients who received education, massage, and medical care to a group of patients who receive standard medical care alone. The researchers showed that the massage group reported significantly less pain and medication use. This group also had improved symptoms of depression.
