Western Area Power Administration markets and delivers reliable, cost-based hydroelectric power and related services within a 15-state region of the central and western U.S. We're one of four power marketing administrations within the U.S. Department of Energy whose role is to market and transmit electricity from multi-use water projects. Our transmission system carries electricity from 57 power plants operated by the Bureau of Reclamation, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the International Boundary and Water Commission. Together, these plants have an installed capacity of 10, 489 megawatts. Western and its energy-producing partners are separately managed and financed. In addition, each water project maintains a separate financial system and records. Western's administrator and staff focus on sound business practices and cost containment.

The general and dedicated all volunteer board and committee members work diligently to support and promote the advancement of our profession. In May, 1978 California's Protection & Advocacy, Inc. (PAI) was founded to provide the services required under the federal Developmental Disabilities Assistance and Bill of Rights Act of 1975. For many years it was governed by a seven member Board of Directors appointed by the Governor and advised by a state appointed Review Committee. PAI opened its first office in Sacramento in 1978; more regional offices followed: Los Angeles, 1980; Bay Area, 1985; San Diego, 2002; Fresno, 2008. In addition, the organization has satellite offices in 26 locations throughout the state. In 2008, the Board changed our name to Disability Rights California to more accurately describe our work. Today, we are the largest disability advocacy agency in the nation, with 220 staff members. The Board of Directors, all of whom are now appointed by existing board members, reflect the diverse constituency of the agency and the ethnic and language community of California.

SALT LAKE CITY -- The Salt Lake City School District is one of the few urban districts in the country with no schools failing the No Child Left Behind requirements. Administrators say it's all thanks to a lot of hard work. Edison Elementary School Principal Tracy Vandeventer used a strategy to turn around one elementary school and is hoping to do the same at her current school. Related: Fewer Utah schools need improvement under No Child Left Behind More Utah schools met testing goals this year under federal No Child Left Behind standards than last year. However, eight Utah school still aren't making the grade. "Data has really become the basis of everything. We set up a data wall that allows us to track every student in literacy and math, " Vandeventer explained. The data walls look can be low-tech white boards with sticky notes -- like the one at Mountain View Elementary School -- where principals track every student's progress.
