Do you know that a tractor's power take off, or PTO as it is commonly called, spins at a rate of 1, 000 times a minute. That's 16 times a second. Toss a six-foot rope over a spinning PTO and it will wrap around the shaft in less than a second. Now imagine that rope is your shoelace or sleeve. How fast could you pull free? PTOs provide a valuable function on today's farms and ranches, bringing a power source to remote areas where other power isn't available. But when PTOs are in operation, they pose a danger to anyone in the vicinity. The National Safety Council estimates that PTO's account for 6 percent of tractor-related fatalities on the farm. In seven out of 10 of those incidents the victim is the tractor operator. In the majority of cases, the protective shield was either missing or damaged. It is important to give the PTO the proper respect.

Organized & incorporated in 1948. Such establishment of the TCFB then allowed for the advent of the UCCE Farm Advisor & 4-H Chapters in Tuolumne County. Recently you may have read an article about our cattle operation. The article was written by Ashley Archibald and appeared in the Union Democrat. The article was about the process of “preg” checking some of our cattle and preparing those pregnant cows, and their calves, for a summer on our forest allotment. How and why the article and how the opportunity presented itself is enough for a short story. Ashley had contacted me, as president of Tuolumne County Farm ‘Bureau, regarding the diesel regulations that the California Air Resources Board had imposed and how they affected agriculture. That was my first contact with her. A bit later, she and I talked about the upcoming candidate’s night and was questioning as to it being alright for her to attend, which it was.

The veterinary hospital has been in operation since the 1940's. We have expanded to a 5 veterinarian hospital providing a broader range of services, including behavioral services, boarding and grooming. The interior of the hospital was completely remodeled recently to enable us to bring a better service to the pet owners of Jersey City and the surrounding area. It is a 3, 800 square foot building with an adjacent car park for about 30 automobiles.
