The Douglas Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) was organized in 1954 by local farmers for the purpose of promoting the art and science of good land use. The SWCD assists landowners and operators in planning and applying the soil and water conservation practices needed to protect and improve their soil and water resources. The SWCD is a legal subdivision of the State of Minnesota, operating under a charter issued by the Secretary of State on November 12, 1946. The activities of the District are governed and directed by an elected board of five supervisors.

One time school teachers, Rick and Maria Mamoser decided to forgo the long commute into the suburbs for a “simpler life” as business owners. Prairie State Mercantile opened at their current location in July, 1998. Selling finer goods, including wine, made exclusively in Illinois (The Prairie State), they were on the leading edge of the “keep it local” movement, winning multiple statewide awards for their concept. Prairie State Winery soon followed (fall of 1999), expanding the concept by producing wines made exclusively from Illinois grown grapes. With their home winemaking experience, science background, and immersion into national wine curriculum, they soon started garnering many awards for their wines as well. With the first vintage of only 500 gallons to the most recent vintages of nearly 10, 000 gallons, Rick and Maria continue to promote the philosophy of “Think Globally, Drink Locally.”

Award winning, hand crafted, Missouri wines. We use time-honored, natural processes to create our handcrafted wines. We age our wines using only missouri oak barrels, creating fresh and vigorous wines. Norton is the grape that, in our opinion, undergoes the most changes in the transition from juice to wine. Our 2008 Norton Reserve was no exception, but the resulting wine is exceptional for its balance, wonderful aromas and tastes, and lack of undesirable characteristics many Norton wines harbor. Popping a ripe berry into your mouth and chewing with contemplation produces the wonderful taste of other ripe deep-purple grapes, with that particular Norton twang of earthiness and tart herbaceousness. Fermentation is fast and furious (but we keep the fermentation area cool by cranking up the air conditioning), and a foxiness seems to enter into the palette of flavors and aromas.

Our estate vineyards are certified sustainable by LIVE (Low Input Viticulture and Enology), IOBC (International Organization for Biological Control), and Salmon Safe. We are fortunate to work with a wide range of grape varieties and vineyard sources. Each vineyard and grape variety has a unique character that contributes to the quality, complexity and balance of our individual wines. Each vineyard and grape variety is hand-crafted separately. We conduct rigorous blending trials that combine discipline and creativity to produce wines that are greater than the sum of their parts. Daily 10am-5pm

Hours- The tasting room is open on a limited schedule: Monday: 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Tuesday: Closed Wednesday: 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Thursday: Closed Friday: 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Saturday: 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. Sunday: 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. First, a note about sweetness-- we make wines with different levels of sweetness, measured as percent residual sugar. This measurement doesn't mean much away from the wine, because sweetness is in the mouth of the beholder, so we've used a simple key to designate sweetness: VS (very sweet), S (sweet), D (dry-- the opposite of sweet), OD (off dry -- dry, with a touch of sweetness). Some of our wines have lived in a barrel (yes, we use real American oak barrels made in Lebanon, MO). We designate these as "barrel aged" or "barrel fermented" and they will have the characteristic oak flavors and "pucker" associated with oak exposure, as well as a better structure for subsequent bottle aging once purchased.
