The laws which give Protection and Advocacy systems the special responsibility to protect and advocate for people with disabilities also give those organizations a unique tool with which to accomplish that task: access to facilities or programs providing their care, and access to their confidential records. This access permits Protection and Advocacy systems to conduct abuse or neglect investigations, provide information and training about the rights of individuals with disabilities, and monitor a facility or program's compliance with respect to the rights and safety of people who receive their services.

The Department of Family Medicine goals are synchronous with those of the UC Irvine School of Medicine: quality patient care teaching, research, and community service. Faculty members teach medical students at our three faculty practice sites in Santa Ana and Anaheim (both FQHC clinics) and the Gottschalk Plaza in Irvine, adjacent to the UC Irvine SOM campus. Our three-year family medicine residency program (30 residents) is located at the Santa Ana Family Health Center, and just received a maximum five-year accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. Our faculty research is focused in multiple areas including medical education, chronic disease management, geriatrics, and integrative medicine. We take particular pride in our commitment to the underserved at Orange County.
