Clay Art Pottery presents Raku and Pit Fired Pottery by Vicki Hardin. Raku is a Japanese inspired method of firing that creates unpredictable smoke patterns and spectacular metallic and crackle effects in the glazes. After initially firing the piece in a kiln, it is glazed and fired a second time. When the temperature of the piece reaches between 1600 and 1800 degrees and the glaze has melted, the piece is placed in combustible materials (leaves, sawdust and pine needles) in a metal container and covered. This is called post reduction during which the oxygen is burned out of the glaze taking the colorants back to a metal producing the metallic lusters seen in raku.

We are a family-owned business that was started by my grandmother Erma Duncan in 1946. She enjoyed and used many artistic mediums, such as watercolors and oils, but her number one love was always the ceramic arts. The transformation of the ceramic piece during the firing process completely captivated her—a true ugly duckling to beautiful swan story!

Founded in 1937, the School of Art is named for Lamar Dodd who as a young man in the 1920's traveled from his home in Georgia to New York to be part of the Art Student's League. There he learned from and worked with many of the luminaries of American art. He returned to Georgia to head the Art Department at the University of Georgia from 1939 until his retirement in 1972. Under his leadership, the department grew significantly. The department was renamed the Lamar Dodd School of Art in 1996. Today the School has more than 1000 art majors and the program is housed in 7 different buildings on campus. The school continues to thrive and expand. Plans are now underway for a new multi- million dollar art complex that will include state-of-the- art modern studios, lecture halls, galleries, and a media center. The new building will be located next to the Georgia Museum of Art, the School of Music, and the Performing Arts Center and will house academic and studio programs.

The Italian Pottery Outlet got its start in 1982, when Ben Spalluto and his wife, Carol, discovered a shared love of Italian ceramics while visiting family in Italy. In the following years, while learning the retail market and finding suppliers in Italy, they hoped that their children could be involved sometime in the future. In 1996, daughter Julie joined the business, followed soon after by her sister, Adele. A few years ago, the Spalluto's son, Joe, also joined the business. We launched our website in 1998.
