How is Cancer Treated? When someone is diagnosed with cancer, they begin a unique journey towards its hopeful irradication. As with most journeys, every diagnosis, and every stage of the disease requires its own roadmap for treatment. There are different therapy options which are sometimes soley used or combined with other modes of treatment. Chemotherapy: Treatment which uses chemicals to disrupt rapidly dividing cells. Malignant cells can become vulnerable to intervention when they are in a state of replication. Chemotherapy's aim is to "catch" the abnormal cells in this vulnerable state and kill the uncontrolled growth of cancerous cells. These can be delivered through various modes with the most common being intravenous (IV) and oral (pills).

Dr. Canfield adds, "By joining together, we will be able to increase the availability of cancer trials and the number of trials in the state. Oklahomans diagnosed with cancer do not have to incur the expense of travel away from the state or experience the anxiety of separation from family and friends who reside here in order to receive the most up to date treatments in cancer therapy. CCA participates in clinical trials to provide Oklahomans with the latest developments in cancer research.

The clinical staff in Southeast’s Radiation Therapy Department includes a full-time in-house board certified radiation oncologist, as well a board certified Ph.D. medical physicist, a board eligible physicist, and a certified medical dosimetrist.
