The Norfolk Public Library consists of the main library in downtown Norfolk, Norfolk Main; the Mary D. Pretlow Anchor Branch Library; 9 branch libraries; and a bookmobile with Internet-connected public computers. All libraries in the NPL system may be used free of charge by all visitors. In addition: NPL is a Family Place library that offers free programs for parents, other caregivers, and children of all ages that focus on developing skills essential to literacy. A local history and genealogy collection is located in the Sargeant Memorial Room at Norfolk Main Library. NPL is a selective depository library for government documents. Norfolk's became the first public library in Virginia in 1904, and its collection includes classic and popular items from the late 19th century to today.

The Archives is the depository for the permanent record of Gonzaga University. Spanning the entire history of the University from 1887 to the present, the University Archives document both the daily administration of Gonzaga University and special events. The Archives houses manuscripts, published material, photographs, sound recordings, film, video, and artifacts. Included are the GONZAGA UNIVERSITY CATALOGS, The GONZAGA BULLETIN (student newspaper), SPIRES (student yearbook), SPIRESIDE and SIGNUM (Alumni Newsletters), commencement programs, and other campus publications. LSU was among the founding members of the Louisiana Online University Information System (LOUIS) network which provides access to most academic library catalogs in the state. The LSU Libraries’ subject strengths include Louisiana materials, sugar culture and technology, Southern history, agriculture, petroleum engineering, plant pathology, natural history, and various aspects of aquaculture including crawfish, wetlands research, and marine biology.

The Public Museum in Grand Rapids, Michigan was founded by a group of civic leaders in 1854 as the Grand Rapids Lyceum of Natural History and in 1868 merged with the Grand Rapids Scientific Club to form the Kent Scientific Institute and Museum. Over the next century, the Museum established itself as a premier educational institution in the area, and continues in to fulfill this role for West Michigan today. A portion of the current Habitats exhibit on the Van Andel Museum Center’s third floor is dedicated to a recreation of the early days of the Museum, and illustrates the changing attitudes about collections-based education and interpretation.

In 1979, when Robert W. Crawford Jr. purchased the of Chicago assets of Broyhill Furniture Rental, his first task was to choose a new name for his new company. He wanted a name that was near to the front of the alphabet, was preferably one syllable, was easy to pronounce, and had positive connotations. Over a period of days, he literally read the entire dictionary and narrowed down the name to 3 good choices: Crown, Beacon, and Brook. After reviewing the merits and benefits of these 3 good options, Mr. Crawford came to believe that Brook had great appeal due to its positive connotations and favorable imagery. The Brook name was shorter and it was a little softer and easier to say. Today, we are very happy that he made the choice to call our company Brook Furniture Rental!
