Short profile:
A+ College Ready is seeking successful math science and English AP teachers interested in becoming a part its Advanced Placement training and incentive program. Three additional Content Directors – in math, science and English will be hired to support over 260 AP Teachers and almost 9000 AP students enrolled in 43 program high schools in 2010-2011. Additional schools, teachers and students will be served as the program continues to expand across the state over the next several years.
Following a highly competitive application process, the A+ Education Partnership in collaboration with Governor Bob Riley, the Alabama Department of Education, AMSTEC and The Alabama Power Foundation secured a multi-million dollar grant from the National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI) to expend and strengthen math, science, and English Advanced Placement (AP) programs in Alabama.
Detailed description:
A+ College Ready, a division of the A+ Education Partnership, was created in August of 2007 with a $13.2 million grant from the National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI). NMSI awarded grants to nonprofits in six states to implement a proven Advanced Placement training and incentive program. Key leadership involved in launching and supporting this public-private partnership include the governor, the state superintendent of education, the Alabama Power Foundation, Regions Financial Corporation, Boeing, ExxonMobil Corporation and the Alabama Math, Science and Technology Education Coalition.
The Advanced Placement Training and Incentive Program increases dramatically the number of students taking and passing AP math, science, and English exams, and expands access to traditionally under-represented students. It uses a comprehensive approach that increases teacher effectiveness and student achievement in rigorous math, science and English courses through training, teacher and student support, vertical teaming, open enrollment, and incentives. In the first year, the initial 12 pilot schools in Alabama saw an 83 percent increase in passing scores earned on AP exams and a 68 percent increase by minority students. The program will be operational in 43 schools in the 2010-2011 school year and will ultimately expand into over 80 schools across the state.
