Detailed description:
Adventist St. Thomas Hospice recognizes death as the final stage of life. We are devoted to serving patient and families through compassionate, supportive, holistic care. We respect their dignity, rights and individuality, seeking to make the final days as comfortable and meaningful as possible.
"Once again our family was blessed with the services of St. Thomas Hospice. Everyone from Mom's hospice nurse to her nurse aide...treated her with compassion, love and respect. How could anyone ask for more. Thank you from the bottom of my heart." -K.B., daughter of a patient.
Our bereavement coordinators provide 13 months of support to the families of our patients through letters, literature and phone calls following the death of their loved one. Our bereavement services are open to all community members dealing with loss, free of charge.
Volunteers are cherished members of the Hospice team. Between our teen and adult volunteers we boast over 100 members who help provide services to patients and their families. There is always room for another caring person to help with our team.
"While there was no purpose great enough for my son to have died, I was helped in that starting the hospice added meaning to his death. It really mattered that Tom lived." - Luci Svoboda
Hospice is a philosophy of care for the individual with a limited life expectancy. It emphasizes compassionate care, quality of life, and choices. It recognizes dying as a natural part of life. Named after a courageous 17-year-old cancer patient, Tom Svoboda, our Hospice program has been caring for and about people since 1980 and has grown from a volunteer program to a not-for-profit, full-service, Medicare-certified Hospice that is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.
Adventist St. Thomas Hospice (ASTH) serves patients and families in the Chicago-area counties of DuPage, Eastern Kane, Northern Will and Western Cook.
