Short profile:

The Arc of San Diego is the largest, most comprehensive provider of services to children and adults with disabilities in San Diego County. Our organization was founded in 1951 by parents and other community members who were concerned about the lack of services available for children with disabilities and their families. The Arc provides assistance to people with disabilities at more than 20 locations throughout the county. Through our programs we are able to offer support to people with disabilities in living independent and fulfilling lives. Arc Community Employment Services: Puts people with disabilities to work in a variety of industries throughout the community. Assists with minimizing barriers to community employment and offers job placement sites where a group of individuals work at local businesses and receive wages as trainees. Provides individual job placement within the local work force, with on-the-job training and ongoing support.

Detailed description:

Community Living Services: Offers a warm and supportive environment to instill confidence and responsibility while meeting the housing needs of people with disabilities. Residents are supported by professionally trained staff who provide 24/7 care. The Sulpizio Family Arc Center of San Diego serves up to 135 people with disabilities near downtown San Diego. Our programs are housed in a state-of-the-art facility that is the hub for the Center’s Adult Development Center, Activity Center, Community Based Program, and Seniors Program. Like other Arc centers, our Adult Development Program has an instructor-to-participant ratio of 1:4 and provides a program of on-going assessment in the areas of self-help, socialization, daily living, sensory-perceptual-motor skills and communication skills to adults with developmental disabilities. We work to maintain or improve their social and self-help skills. The Adult Development Center and Activity Center programs utilize eight themed classroom type settings that provide structured, site-based programming. The classrooms feature a Computer Lab, and Sensory, Therapeutic Recreation, Theatre, Spa, Pet & Nature, Music, and Art & Crafts rooms. The Community Based Program and the Seniors Program are both based at the Sulpizio Family Center; however, participants spend a majority of their day off-site and active in the community through volunteerism, paid work opportunities, and/or visits to San Diego locations such as parks, museums, senior centers, shopping centers, movie theaters, and more. The administation offices are also housed at this location. These departments include: Community Living Services, Independent Living Services, Personal and Leisure Services, Arc Community Employment Services, Parent/Infant Program, Respite Services, Marketing & Development, Human Resources, Accounting, Payroll.
