ATLAS BARRY

Dr. Barry Atlas has been practicing Ophthalmology since 1978, and has helped carry the Hampton Roads area into the age of progressive and innovative vision restoration. Dr. Atlas has been called one of the area's best and most well known eye surgeons, having introduced many of the surgical procedures now performed by other ophthalmologists. He brought vision correction surgery to Hampton Roads in 1984, performed the area's first combined cataract extraction, intraocular lens implant and cornea transplant procedure, introduced one-stitch cataract surgery which subsequently evolved into a painless no-stitch 10 minute procedure, performed the area's first lasik operation in front of most of the area's eye surgeons at the Laser Optic Center, and has remained at the leading edge of progressive contemporary vision saving and restoration techniques.

Dr. Atlas earned his undergraduate degree, graduating with high honors from the University of Illinois, followed by receiving his MD degree from the prestigious University of Chicago, one of the best known medical institutions in the world. After completing his Ophthalmology residency training at Northwestern University, he was selected to receive specialized fellowship training at the University of Connecticut, under the expertise of Dr. Daniel Taylor, where he received rigorous training in cataract, lens implant, corneal and vision correction surgery.

As part of his unwavering commitment to the evolving field of Ophthalmology, Dr. Barry Atlas is dedicated to the continuing education of other eye care providers. He continues to share his expertise and valuable experience on the latest vision correction surgeries, small incision cataract microsurgical techniques, and innovative operating room methods through lecturing and in-office and in-OR training. He continues to give individualized attention to his patients, paying particular attention to the smallest and most important details, and standing by his patients through their pre-surgical evaluations, surgery and post-surgical care.

When not engaged in his successful and busy practice, Dr. Atlas enjoys time with his wife Tammy, a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant known to many of his patients, and with their three children. Their family pastimes include travelling, enjoying the Outer Banks beaches and playing golf together.
