Baylor Research Institute (BRI) is a dedicated research center for finding prevention therapies and treatments for diseases and illnesses. Our research is focused on the patient. This means our work involves more than microscopic studies - it brings the research to the patient's bedside. We work to understand the basis of a disease, identify potential treatments or preventive therapies, and enroll patients in research trials. Established in 1984 and led by Michael Ramsay, MD, FRCA, BRI has a network of over 3000 board-certified physicians including approximately 500 active research investigators experienced in drug, device, and vaccine studies. In addition, BRI staffs approximately 250 employees, including scientists, laboratory assistants, and research coordinators.

Serving more than 800, 000 people at medical centers in Dallas, Fort Worth, Garland, Grapevine, Irving, Plano, Waxahachie, and Carrollton, Baylor Health Care System offers a large and diverse pool of potential research participants. Currently, more than 800 research projects are underway. Baylor Research Institute collaborates with the medical industry to develop its technology and intellectual property. BRI is supported by philanthropy through the Baylor Health Care System Foundation and by grants from the National Institutes of Health and other national organizations. Baylor receives millions of dollars in research funding annually. The results of BRI's research--basic, applied, and clinical--are reported in major scientific publications and at national and international medical meetings. As a leading clinical research institution, BRI offers patients the opportunity to participate in clinical trials across a wide range of medical specialties. The Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Programs (AAHRPP) Accreditation Program is a voluntary, peer-driven, educationally based model of accreditation. It seeks to recognize high-quality human research protection programs of organizations that use human beings in research. For an organization to receive accreditation, standards must meet or exceed federal regulatory requirements for protection, and must be reasonable, attainable, and representative of current best practices. Baylor Research Institute received Full Accreditation from AAHRPP in December of 2003 and was re-accredited in 2006.
