In the late 1970s, J. Pat Evans, M.D., then the team physician for the Dallas Cowboys, presented an idea to Boone Powell Sr., former executive director and senior consultant to Baylor University Medical Center. His dream was to build a sports medicine facility that would provide a medically based fitness center for treatment and rehabilitation of sports-related injuries as well as preventive physical conditioning facilities. Nearly 20 years later, the Baylor Tom Landry Center opened in January 1991 and was named for the former Dallas Cowboys coach Tom Landry. The 320, 000-square-foot complex is home to numerous physicians, in addition to the Baylor Tom Landry Fitness Center. The Baylor Tom Landry Health and Wellness Center is a comprehensive multipurpose facility dedicated to health, fitness and rehabilitation.

The complex includes the Baylor Tom Landry Fitness Center, Cardiac Rehabilitation Center, Baylor Motion & Sports Performance Center and the Baylor Rehabilitation System Outpatient Therapy Clinic. Features: a 7, 000-square-foot strength and conditioning training room; a 3, 300-square-foot cardiovascular training room; a 25-meter, 9-lane indoor competitive lap pool; a four-lane, warm-water exercise pool; ) lush 7-acre, secured park; two racquetball courts; two aerobics studios with Neo-Shock suspended flooring; Pilates studio; Yoga studio; 800-sqaure-foot cycling studio; outdoor 70-meter, four-lane straightway; more than 100 group exercise and aquatic exercise classes per week; swim programs for infants to adults; water safety programs; luxurious locker rooms with full size lockers and a lounge area; Kid’s Clubhouse; private showers, steam room, sauna and whirlpool; towel and laundry services. The Baylor Rehabilitation System Outpatient Therapy Clinic provides specialized physical therapy for all individuals, including those with sports-related injuries who need to return to a more physically demanding level of recovery and activity. The center is staffed by sports-trained physical therapists and athletic trainers. Affiliated with the Jack and Jane Hamilton Hospital at Baylor University Medical Center, the Cardiac Rehabilitation Center focuses on preventive cardiology and the latest therapy and cardiac rehabilitation research. The center is staffed by a multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, nutritionists, social workers and exercise physiologists. It features advanced testing equipment to examine cardiac capabilities and measure stress, a specially designed cardiac telemetry monitoring system that allows patients to perform advanced forms of exercise such as racquetball and swimming, while being EKG-monitored by cardiac technicians.Both cardiac patients and their families receive education and behavior modification techniques.
