Short profile:
When someone has a sleep disorder, the normal sleeping pattern is disturbed. The most common sleep disorders are sleep apnea, narcolepsy and chronic insomnia.
Sleep apnea occurs when a person stops breathing frequently during sleep, sometimes as often as 100 times per night. Loud snoring, high blood pressure, and morning headaches are common symptoms. The condition may be life threatening.
Narcolepsy occurs when a person has irregular sleep patterns and suffers from “sleep attacks” at times throughout the day. Common symptoms of this neurological condition are paralysis or hallucinations just before or after sleeping
Chronic insomnia occurs when a person often has trouble falling asleep or wakes up and stays awake for long periods during the night. It may be caused by psychological or physiological problems.
Other sleep disorders include sleepwalking, restless arms and legs, violent nightmares and “internal clock” disorders.
