BRIDGEPORT PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Short profile:

Bridgeport has embarked on a massive school renovation and construction program. Under the "Master Plan" new schools and modernization of existing buildings are being planned.

I strongly believe that all students in Bridgeport Public Schools can achieve at high levels and that every youngster deserves the opportunity to learn in optimal conditions. Setting the highest expectations for all students and affording equal opportunities for students to have access to quality and powerful learning experiences drive this vision. To fulfill this ideal, the District’s main mission centers on improving student performance. All academic programs and initiatives promote the acquisition of critical thinking skills as our students develop abilities that serve them in becoming successful and thoughtful adults.

Detailed description:

Bridgeport Public Schools consist of 31 elementary schools, three comprehensive high schools, three alternative/opportunity programs and an inter-district vocational aquaculture school. Our schools serve more than 21, 000 students, making Bridgeport the second largest school system in Connecticut. The school system employs a professional staff of more than 1, 700.

Dr. Ramos was responsible for everything related to teaching and learning and was in the process of developing the 2006-2010 Comprehensive Strategic Plan. In addition, he was assisting school districts in raising student achievement and closing achievement gaps, facilitating high school reform and working to develop character programs. A primary focus for Dr. Ramos was working with urban superintendents in addressing the eight Connecticut schools that are in the fourth year of “in need of improvement” under the No Child Left Behind law.
