Short profile:
Cleveland Area Hospital is a 14-bed, critical access hospital located at 1401 West Pawnee Street in Cleveland, Oklahoma, approximately 35 miles northwest of Tulsa. The hospital is a non-profit organization owned and operated by the Cleveland Area Hospital Trust Authority, a civic association whose Board of Directors is composed of members of the local community.
Detailed description:
In addition to 24-hour Emergency Room services, the hospital also offers hospitalist services, 24-hour lab and x-ray services, general surgery, physical therapy and rehabilitation, swing bed services, outpatient geriatric psychological therapy, health screenings, wound care, and specialty clinics for cardiac and Ob/Gyn screenings and procedures
In March, 1961 Cleveland community members came together to discuss the need for an area hospital. After gathering and compiling information, plans were soon underway to build a hospital facility to meet the health care needs of the growing community.
Funds for the new building were provided by community fundraising efforts and grants, including $75, 000 awarded by the Tulsa Mabee Foundation. Mr. and Mrs. O.A. Swan donated a five-acre tract of land on the west edge of Cleveland for the hospital site. The hospital's Foundation, created to assist with fundraising and capitalization issues, purchased five additional acres adjoining the Swan land in hopes of future expansion.
Construction began with a ground-breaking ceremony on July 20, 1962. Just over one year later, in August 1963, Cleveland Area Hospital opened its doors and welcomed its first patient.
Over the years, the hospital has undergone modifications, additions in square footage, upgrades, and installation of new equipment in order to meet state and federal standards.
In 1988, Cleveland voters agreed to collect a one-cent sales tax for hospital usage. Various expansion projects and upgrades have been funded by these sales tax dollars.
Though the hospital has been operated and managed by various healthcare corporations over its 47-year history, it is currently under the local control of the Cleveland Area Hospital Trust Authority, a civic organization composed of community professionals. What began as a community-inspired venture has come full circle and is now operating as an entirely local organization.
