A thorough physical examination is the cornerstone to maintaining your pet's health and longvity. The doctor will check your pet's gums, teeth and oral cavity for the presence of periodontal disease, diseased teeth, growths and other abnormalities and will educate you about home dental care. The ears will be checked for signs of infection, often with the use of the otoscope to examine the ear canals. The eyes will be examined for evidence of inflammation, cataracts, aging changes, and changes in the eyelids and eyelashes. Fluorescein can be used to evaluate corneal damage, tear production can be measured, and tonometry can be used to measure intraocular pressure (a sign of glaucoma). The heart will be carefully listened to for signs of valvular heart disease or arrhythmias, and the lungs will be evaluated for signs of bronchitis, respiratory infections and other diseases. The abdomen will be thoroughly palpated for masses or other changes in the gastrointestinal system and vital organs.
Columbia Veterinary Hospital has a separate surgical suite and advanced equipment. All surgeries are performed using complete sterile technique. The surgeon wears a sterile gown, cap, mask and gloves, Separate autoclaved sterile instrument packs are used for each patient. Isofluorane inhalant anesthesia is used, and each anesthetized patient is monitored by a veterianry technician as well as respiratory monitoring equipment. The surgery table is padded and heated to body temperature. Special equipment includes blood pressure monitors and radiocautery.
The Columbia Veterinary Hospital veterinarians perform a wide a variety of surgical procedurs, including ovariohysterectomies, orchiectomies (neuters), tumor excisions, bladder surgeries, and wound repair. More complex procedures, including orthopedic techniques such as bone plating, can be scheduled by appointment with a board-certified specialty surgeon.
