Review & Update: A Nurse Anesthesia Refresher Program is designed for certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs) who have not been substantially engaged in the practice of nurse anesthesia for more than five years.
Detailed description:
Review & Update: A Nurse Anesthesia Refresher Program is divided into three phases:
1. Phase I is designed for all refresher students. It consists of 100 CE credits obtained by attending an onsite, 2 week course in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Phase I is designed for the nurse anesthetist not engaged in clinical anesthesia practice for more that 3 years but less than 5 years. The required clinical component and documentation of clinical ACLS, PALS and NRP certification are separate and not provided in this program.
2. Phase II is designed for those not engaged in clinical anesthesia practice for more than 5 years but less than 7 years. In addition to completing Phase II, this participant must have also completed Phase I. Documentation of 200 CE credits is necessary. One hundred credits are obtained by completion of Phase I. Phase II (100 CE credits) is completed by a program-guided independent self-study and testing.
All questions will be taken from the textbook Nagelhout JJ, Plaus KL, eds. Nurse Anesthesia. 4th ed. Philadelphia : W.B. Saunders Co.; 2009. Questions will be answered and returned to instructors for grading. The grade must be 80 or higher to successfully complete Phase II. The questions will be derived from over 40 self study modules that should be completed within 26 weeks. The number of questions to be answered are over 2, 700. The self-study should be completed 6 months after the on-site refresher course.
3. Phase III is designed for those not engaged in clinical practice for more than 7 years. Documentation of 300 CE credits is necessary. One hundred credits are obtained by completing the Phase I on-site refresher course and 100 hours are obtained by completing the Phase II program-guided independent study and test with a passing score of 80 or higher.
