Short profile:

The Department of Computer Science (CS) has research and education programs in software engineering, artificial intelligence, cognitive modeling and human computer interaction, computer vision and graphics, high performance computing, networks and security, symbolic computation and computer science education. The department recently established, with digital media, a joint gaming curriculum and research lab.

Detailed description:

Our department, which emphasizes both interdisciplinary and applied research, is supported by major federal research grants from NSF (including six Information Technology Research (ITR) grants), DARPA, ONR, DoD, DoE, DoJ and NIST, as well as by private sources such as UNISYS, Nissan, Lockheed Martin, Intel, Sun Microsystems and Microsoft. The Applied Communication and Information Networking (ACIN) Program, run jointly with Electrical and Computer Engineering and a wide range of industrial partners, has the potential to become a model in interdisciplinary and applied computing research; employing over 50 undergraduate co-op students, winning multiple awards, deploying technology used in the field by a variety of first responders including those in Hurricane Katrina, and spawning several successful companies.
