DC Water provides nearly 600,000 residents, 16.6 million annual visitors, and 700,000 people who are employed in the District of Columbia with water and sewer/wastewater treatment.
Blue Plains treats wastewater from jurisdictions in Maryland and Virginia for approximately 1.6 million people.
Strong emphasis on water quality involves annual system flushing; routine water quality testing; ongoing system upgrades; lead water service line replacement; and strong partnerships with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Washington Aqueduct, the District environmental and health departments and the George Washington University School of Public Health.
DC Water pumped 108 million gallons of water per day on average in FY 09.
Blue Plains has a treatment capacity of 370 million gallons per day and a peak capacity of more than 1 billion gallons per day.
