The company was founded in 1939 by Cal Turner in Scottsville, KY as J.L. Turner & Son, Inc. The name was changed to Dollar General Corporation in 1968.
The company was acquired by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & CO (KKR), which is a private equity firm. He published the company in 2009.
