The Arc of Delaware is a statewide chapter of the national organization, serving more than 25, 000 Delawareans with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families. A tax-exempt nonprofit organization governed by a volunteer Board of Directors, The Arc of Delaware comprises more than 800 contributing members. Our membership includes individuals with intellectual disabilities, their families, professionals in the field and community representatives. Our vision is that every individual and family affected by intellectual disability in Delaware has access to the information, advocacy, and skills they need to participate as active citizens and active members of their community. Detailed description:
We work to ensure that people with intellectual and developmental disabilities are valued, respected and included in all communities; direct their own lives, choosing their services and supports from many available sources; are empowered through nonprofit advocacy that ensures state and federal governments administer programs and set budgets that meet everyone’s needs. Support: In addition to serving as a clearinghouse of information on intellectual and developmental disabilities, The Arc of Delaware also provides referrals, training and assistance to individuals, their families and the community to promote better understanding and better lives. Outreach: Case Advocacy program: Information, referral, training and direct support to help people with disabilities achieve and maintain independent lives. Education: Parent Mentor program: Teaching parents of children with special needs how to help other parents navigate the Delaware special education system. Empowerment: Delaware People First: Supporting young adults transition into self-advocates through the Delaware People First program. A collaboration of the Delaware Developmental Disabilities Council and The Arc of Delaware to bring together all information on affordable housing options available to persons with disabilities in Delaware.
