A complete blood count (CBC) provides important information about the kinds and numbers of cells in the blood, especially red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. A CBC helps your health professional evaluate symptoms and diagnose conditions. White blood cell (WBC, leukocyte) count. White blood cells protect the body against infection. If an infection develops, white blood cells attack and destroy the bacteria, virus, or other organism causing it. When a person has a bacterial infection, the number of white cells can increase dramatically. White blood cell types (WBC differential). The major types of white blood cells are neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, and basophils. Immature neutrophils, called band neutrophils, are also included and counted as part of this test. Each type of cell plays a different role in protecting the body. The numbers of each one of these types of white blood cells give important information about the immune system.

The SDSBVI provides a full academic program, kindergarten through high school, with special emphasis given to adapting teaching materials and teaching methods to meet the needs of visually impaired students. The curriculum blends academic coursework and practical skills to enable our students to attain maximum independence. We offer coursework in independent travel, Braille, activities of daily living, low vision utilization, use of specialized equipment, and preparation for employment. Each student has an IEP that addresses educational and social needs as well as disability-specific needs. The Functional Skills Program is designed for students with one or more additional handicapping conditions, this curriculum presents materials in small, sequential steps. Each individually designed program focuses on daily living and self-help skills, pre-vocational skills, functional academics, communication and social/leisure-time skills.
