HSV-1 is usually passed from person to person by kissing. HSV-1 can also spread from the mouth to the genitals during oral sex. If this happens, it becomes a case of genital herpes. HSV-2 is most often passed by vaginal sex and anal sex. But just as HSV-1 can infect the genitals and cause genital herpes, HSV-2 can pass from one person's genitals to another person's mouth, resulting in oral herpes. About one-fifth of all people aged 12 and up in the U.S. are infected with the HSV-2 virus that causes genital herpes, but as many as 90% don't know it. Experts estimate 50% to 80% of adults have oral herpes. One in four women compared with one in five men are infected with genital herpes. One reason may be that the virus can infect a woman's genitals more easily than it can a man's. It becomes more common as people age and the more sex partners people have.

Houston Eye Associates was founded over 30 years ago. Many of the physicians who were founding members of Houston Eye Associates also taught medical residents at the University of Texas Medical School. Founding members included Charles Russo, M.D., Malcolm Mazow, M.D., Robert Stewart, M.D., Robert Wilkins, M.D., and Jeffrey Lanier, M.D. Their vision was to establish a comprehensive ophthalmology clinic that encompassed not only premium eye examinations, glasses, and contact lens care, but also incorporated all the possible sub-specialty areas of ophthalmology. At this time in the late 1960's, this idea was not commonly used as the model for physician clinics. Medicine, as it was practiced then, was not as sophisticated in its diagnostic capabilities as it is today. Many of today's standard diagnostic testing tools did not exist.

Urgent eye care includes the care that you need immediately for conditions such as: Pinkeye, red eyes, foreign body in the eye, sudden vision loss, flashes or floaters, eye pain, eyelid swelling, ocular allergies, any other urgent concerns that may arise. Services: Your exam will include a full eye health assessment which includes an examination of the inside and outside of your eyes including dilation, an intraocular pressure evaluation (often referred to as the “glaucoma test”), photography of the eyes if necessary, visual field examination if necessary, and many other tests that are done on an as-needed basis.
