His educational background includes a Bachelor of Science degree in 1971 from Florida Presbyterian College (Eckerd College) in St. Petersburg, Florida, and a Master in Microbiology degree in 1974 and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree (Charter Class) in 1980 from the University of Florida, Gainesville. Dr. Surya Challa was born into a family of surgeons in South India. He graduated from JIPMER Medical College in Pondicherry, India; He continued his surgical training at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York. Dr. Challa completed a research fellowship in liver cancer surgery at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. After graduating in the year 2000, Dr. Challa worked as a surgeon at Catskill Regional Med Center in Harris, NY and at Rappahannock General Hospital in Kilmarnock, Virginia. After his marriage, Dr. Challa moved to the Tidewater area where he presently resides with his wife and son. His interests include racquetball, travel, music and electronics.
