From the very beginning, Mercy Family Center provided quality assessment and intervention services that are accessible to people of all income levels. The staff recognized that the individual is part of the larger framework of family, neighborhood, school and community. An alternative to traditional “Western” medicine is Complimentary and Alternative Medicine (CAM); it includes a diverse range of treatments including herbal and botanicals, acupuncture, magnets, chiropractic medicine, and yoga. Studies indicate that approximately 24 to 44% of persons with epilepsy use CAM treatments. Epilepsy, as a disease, also is frequently more than just seizures- feelings of stress, anxiety, depression, cognitive problems, and headaches are very common. Because treatment with antiepileptic medication frequently does not address these symptoms, many persons with epilepsy seek relief with CAM therapies.
