The Douglas Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) was organized in 1954 by local farmers for the purpose of promoting the art and science of good land use. The SWCD assists landowners and operators in planning and applying the soil and water conservation practices needed to protect and improve their soil and water resources. The SWCD is a legal subdivision of the State of Minnesota, operating under a charter issued by the Secretary of State on November 12, 1946. The activities of the District are governed and directed by an elected board of five supervisors.

CAPS's mission is to develop and demonstrate techniques for the numerical analysis and prediction of high-impact local weather and environmental conditions, with emphasis on the assimilation of observations from Doppler radars and other advanced in-situ and remote sensing systems. CAPS conducts a broad-based program of basic and applied storm-scale research, and its award-winning Advanced Regional Prediction System (ARPS) is used worldwide. CAPS wants to be the world leader in convective-scale data assimilation and numerical weather prediction, providing a venue for exploring bold new ideas, attracting the best scientists and students, and facilitating the transfer of knowledge and technology to academia, government and industry.

CATF organized a coalition of more than two dozen state, local, and national environmental and public health organizations in a public education campaign to make the public aware of the vast health and environmental damage caused by those plants. These organizations pushed for model policies at the state level, while CATF commissioned dozens of new studies on coal’s impact—in many cases, studies by the same independent academic experts who advised the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and industry itself. In 2005, US EPA adopted rules requiring 60% cuts in health and environmental pollutants from these plants.

In 1912 Marquette University acquired the Trinity Hospital Training School for Nursing and the nurses' residence. Quickly following that acquisition the nursing school became a division of higher education at Marquette and graduated 18 nursing students. At that time, Marquette University was the only university in Wisconsin to offer a three-year nursing certificate. In 1936, the College of Nursing became a constituent college of Marquette University with a four-year collegiate program designed by the College's first dean, Dr. Berenice Beck, OSF. The College of Nursing now offers a curriculum leading to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree, a Masters of Science in Nursing degree, a Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing degree and has a wide array of offerings for those pursuing a career in nursing. To date, over 6, 500 people have graduated from Marquette's nursing programs.

Yet, the Lone Star State is losing its undeveloped land faster than any other state in the United States.
