The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is the worldwide leader for research to cure type 1 diabetes. It sets the global agenda for diabetes research, and is the largest charitable funder and advocate of diabetes science worldwide. The mission of JDRF is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that strikes children and adults suddenly, and can be fatal. Until a cure is found, people with type 1 diabetes have to test their blood sugar and give themselves insulin injections multiple times or use a pump each day, every day of their lives. And even with that intensive care, insulin is not a cure for diabetes, nor does it prevent its eventual and devastating complications, which may include kidney failure, blindness, heart disease, stroke, and amputation.

More than 80 percent of JDRF's expenditures directly support research and research-related education. We spearheaded breakthrough science in pursuit of devices, technologies, and potential therapies that will help people control their diabetes, keeping them healthier and complications-free until we find a cure. Our groundbreaking continuous glucose monitor research the first step in our journey to build an artificial pancreas not only generated excitement in the scientific community (and was named one of the top research advances of the year by ABC News), but also led to increased insurance reimbursement for CGM devices by most every major insurer. We catapulted the field of regenerative medicine to the forefront in diabetes research, creating momentum for more researchers to pursue this science with discovery after discovery of the regeneration and expansion capabilities of insulin-producing cells.

The Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America is a non-profit, volunteer-driven organization dedicated to finding the cure for Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. It was founded in 1967 by Irwin M. and Suzanne Rosenthal, William D. and Shelby Modell, and Henry D. Janowitz, M.D. Four decades ago, the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation created the field of Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis research. Today, the Foundation funds cutting-edge studies at major medical institutions, nurtures investigators at the early stages of their careers, and finances underdeveloped areas of research. Educational workshops and symposia, together with our scientific journal, Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, enable medical professionals to keep pace with this rapidly growing field. No wonder the National Institutes of Health has commended the Foundation for "uniting the research community and strengthening IBD research."

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation awards most grants through calls for proposals (CFPs) issued for national programs. A national program consists of a cluster of grantees and other interested parties who work together to create impact in one of the Foundation's program areas. Local Funding Partnerships is housed under the umbrella of RWJF’s Vulnerable Populations—a portfolio of grantmaking programs that identifies new approaches for improved health by recognizing the critical relationship between our health and where and how we live, work, learn and play. Vulnerable Populations programs seek to improve health where it happens. Typically RWJF national programs are administered by a small group of staff members who work at a separate location, not at the Foundation headquarters. National program offices are located across the U.S. As it happens, the Local Funding Partnerships office is not far from RWJF.
