At Biogen Idec, we believe strongly in the value of successful partnerships, and we do everything we can to make them work. If your company is in the later stages of development, Biogen Idec can provide a wealth of resources to help successfully commercialize your product. Our approach to partnerships is driven by two core principles that promote success: respect and flexibility.

Manufacturing is a key strength at Biogen Idec. The company's capabilities and capacity for protein manufacturing are world class in quality and scale. The manufacturing team is responsible for the last leg of a long journey. This journey is difficult, expensive and can take well over a decade. The process begins in research and development and is ultimately transferred to Manufacturing, but Manufacturing is also involved at the development stage to ensure we can produce what we create.
-
In the beginning, Biogen assembled a team of biologists, each doing breakthrough science in small, separate labs. The emphasis was on important science; two of the co-founders, Phillip Sharp and Walter Gilbert, went on to win the Nobel Prize. Biogen was one of the first companies to develop recombinant proteins using genetic technology. This pioneering work ultimately led to the development of AVONEX®, an interferon beta-1a used to treat multiple sclerosis. Today, Biogen Idec is a $4 billion Fortune 500 company, serving patients around the world. We are proud to have been an important member of the biotechnology industry since its infancy and continue to pursue new ways to create new standards of care in therapeutic areas with high unmet medical needs. A commitment to research is fundamental to our mission at Biogen Idec; to create new standards of care for unmet medical needs, we must continually develop more effective ways to approach research.
-
At the heart of Biogen Idec's mission is the development and delivery of new therapies to help patients with serious unmet medical needs. The process is long, complex and expensive. Discoveries that seem promising in the lab may never make it to market. In fact, for every 10, 000 compounds initially identified, only one on average will ultimately be approved for use in the United States.

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is the worldwide leader for research to cure type 1 diabetes. It sets the global agenda for diabetes research, and is the largest charitable funder and advocate of diabetes science worldwide. The mission of JDRF is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that strikes children and adults suddenly, and can be fatal. Until a cure is found, people with type 1 diabetes have to test their blood sugar and give themselves insulin injections multiple times or use a pump each day, every day of their lives. And even with that intensive care, insulin is not a cure for diabetes, nor does it prevent its eventual and devastating complications, which may include kidney failure, blindness, heart disease, stroke, and amputation.

More than 80 percent of JDRF's expenditures directly support research and research-related education. We spearheaded breakthrough science in pursuit of devices, technologies, and potential therapies that will help people control their diabetes, keeping them healthier and complications-free until we find a cure. Our groundbreaking continuous glucose monitor research the first step in our journey to build an artificial pancreas not only generated excitement in the scientific community (and was named one of the top research advances of the year by ABC News), but also led to increased insurance reimbursement for CGM devices by most every major insurer. We catapulted the field of regenerative medicine to the forefront in diabetes research, creating momentum for more researchers to pursue this science with discovery after discovery of the regeneration and expansion capabilities of insulin-producing cells.
