  • HANNAH NICOLE VINEYARDS, LLC
CA, 94513 BRENTWOOD, 6700 BALFOUR ROAD

We never intended to be in the wine business. In 1999, we purchased ten acres of land in the heart of the best agricultural region in California; to plant Granny Smith Apples! However, times were changing and the price of apples plummeted, so we made the decision to plant Cabernet grapes instead. And then we were hooked... By 2002, we had been bitten by the wine bug. Like many winery owners, what started as a weekend hobby in the garage quickly grew into an unbridled passion to bring great handcrafted wines to a larger audience than just friends and family. We wanted to show the world we could make world class wines from one of Californiaís first grape growing regions. Contra Costa County was home to some of the original vineyards planted at the turn of the 19th century.

"It's up to us to organize. No one can do it for us. See to it that your Farm Center endorses the State Federation at its next meeting. If the farmer does not demand a square deal no one is going to do it for him." A few weeks after those words appeared in the September 1919 edition of the Monterey County Farm Bureau Monthly, delegates from 32 county Farm Bureaus met in Berkeley to create the California Farm Bureau Federation. The fledgling organization, with a combined membership of 24, 168, elected Dr. W.H. Walker of Willows as its first president and occupied two rooms within Hilgard Hall on the University of California campus in Berkeley. The California Farm Bureau Federation was formed in 1919 at a meeting of County Farm Bureau’s in our state. County Farm Bureau’s were established as a link between the University of California Extension and farmers. For a county to be allocated a “Cooperative Extension” farm advisor, that county had to sign up a majority of its farmers into a “Farm Bureau.” The intent of this was to have an organization for the farm advisors to give reports on the latest research from the Universities. This also enabled the U.C. Extension system to conduct field trial in different parts of our state.

  • SAN MATEO COUNTY FARM BUREAU
CA, 94019 HALF MOON BAY, 765 MAIN STREET

Do you know that a tractor's power take off, or PTO as it is commonly called, spins at a rate of 1, 000 times a minute. That's 16 times a second. Toss a six-foot rope over a spinning PTO and it will wrap around the shaft in less than a second. Now imagine that rope is your shoelace or sleeve. How fast could you pull free? PTOs provide a valuable function on today's farms and ranches, bringing a power source to remote areas where other power isn't available. But when PTOs are in operation, they pose a danger to anyone in the vicinity. The National Safety Council estimates that PTO's account for 6 percent of tractor-related fatalities on the farm. In seven out of 10 of those incidents the victim is the tractor operator. In the majority of cases, the protective shield was either missing or damaged. It is important to give the PTO the proper respect.

The county Farm Bureau is the nucleus of the organization. It is here that members join by payment of nominal annual dues which entitles them to the wide range of services and benefits of membership.

  • SANTA CLARA COUNTY FARM BUREAU
CA, 95037 MORGAN HILL, 605 TENNANT AVENUE

We are a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and preserving farming and ranching in the Santa Clara Valley. We believe that farming brings economic and environmental benefits to all residents of the Santa Clara Valley. Farmers and ranchers in Santa Clara County grow 100 different crops and contribute $250 million to the local economy each year. Some farmers sell their products locally and have developed niche markets, such as chocolate-covered fruit or nursery products. Others ship their products or meat to the East Coast, Japan, Mexico and all points in between. Our local products are key ingredients in such well-known products as Pace Picante Sauce, Five Brothers Pasta Sauce, Safeway soups and more. The Santa Clara County Farm Bureau's key programs are political involvement, education and member development.
