Manufacturing is a key strength at Biogen Idec. The company's capabilities and capacity for protein manufacturing are world class in quality and scale. The manufacturing team is responsible for the last leg of a long journey. This journey is difficult, expensive and can take well over a decade. The process begins in research and development and is ultimately transferred to Manufacturing, but Manufacturing is also involved at the development stage to ensure we can produce what we create.

In the beginning, Biogen assembled a team of biologists, each doing breakthrough science in small, separate labs. The emphasis was on important science; two of the co-founders, Phillip Sharp and Walter Gilbert, went on to win the Nobel Prize. Biogen was one of the first companies to develop recombinant proteins using genetic technology. This pioneering work ultimately led to the development of AVONEX®, an interferon beta-1a used to treat multiple sclerosis. Today, Biogen Idec is a $4 billion Fortune 500 company, serving patients around the world. We are proud to have been an important member of the biotechnology industry since its infancy and continue to pursue new ways to create new standards of care in therapeutic areas with high unmet medical needs. A commitment to research is fundamental to our mission at Biogen Idec; to create new standards of care for unmet medical needs, we must continually develop more effective ways to approach research.

At the heart of Biogen Idec's mission is the development and delivery of new therapies to help patients with serious unmet medical needs. The process is long, complex and expensive. Discoveries that seem promising in the lab may never make it to market. In fact, for every 10, 000 compounds initially identified, only one on average will ultimately be approved for use in the United States.

Trying to figure out what is causing your allergies can be difficult. The first thing you need to do is to pay close attention to when and where you are having your allergy symptoms. Allergens are small particles, such as pollen, dust, animal dander or mold, that your body can be allergic to. Throughout the day, we are exposed to many different of these allergens. Therefore, it can be difficult to determine what specifically you are allergic to. Fortunately, there is another way to figure out what you are allergic to. One of the most accurate ways of diagnosing the causes of allergies to is by undergoing skin testing.

The respiratory system serves two main functions in the body. First, it allows oxygen to be transported from the air into the lungs with each inhale. Conversely, it removes carbon dioxide from the blood stream with each exhale. Secondly, with each breath, oxygen is absorbed by the lungs and then transported to the rest of the body by the blood. Oxygen is needed in each cell to keep the cell alive. Without oxygen, all our cells die and in turn, we die. The respiratory system is designed to ensure that all our cells have access to life sustaining oxygen.

Business hours: Monday: 8-5:30; Tuesday: 8-4:45; Wednesday: 7-4:45; Thursday: 8-5:30; Friday: 8-4:45. The scope of our practice ranges from managing the annoyance of nasal allergies to the treatment of life-threatening allergic reactions and lung diseases (and everything in between). We understand that simple nasal symptoms are often not so simple. There are few conditions that can impact your quality of daily life more than allergic-based diseases. Studies show that people suffering from nasal allergies don’t sleep well, don’t do as well at work and school, have more sinus infections and headaches and have a lower quality of life, in general, than those without allergies. Our patients are frequently amazed by how much better they can feel with aggressive management of their allergies. Most people don’t know how much can be done and many assume that they must just live with their symptoms.

The Buffalo Medical Group provides its patients with several important gastrointestinal diagnostic tests to ensure early detection, prevention and treatment of a variety of diseases, many of which could be life-threatening, as in the case of cancer. A colonoscopy is a test that enables the physician to examine the lining of the entire colon (large intestine) to detect the presence of polyps, sample tissue for biopsy, stop bleeding, and band internal hemorrhoids. Polyps are pre-cancerous growths that can become colon cancer if not removed. If polyps are found, they can be removed during the colonoscopy. This examination involves the use of a slim flexible tube with a lighted camera at the tip. This enables the physician to easily inspect, diagnose and treat many common lower GI disorders such as Ulcerative Colitis, Crohn's Disease, and Diverticulosis/Diverticulitis, as well as polyps and cancerous lesions.
