Fugitive Unit (Warrant Team) All of this unit's officers are Certified Law Enforcement Officers who have graduated from the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy. They are the only Department staff certified and allowed to carry weapons. Three Polk County Sheriff's Officers and a Polk County Detention Officer are part of the Fugitive Unit. The units' duties include apprehension of fugitives, including those from other jurisdictions and agencies, surveillance of probation, parole, and residential facility offenders, training and instruction of fellow staff members, and assisting with the Sheriff's Work Alternative Program.

Men's Residential Facilties These facilities are located on the south side of Des Moines on the historic Ft. Des Moines military grounds. Building 68 houses the eighty (80) "probation" offenders who were sentence by the Court to the facility as a condition of probation. Building 70 houses one hundred twenty (120) offenders placed on work release by the Board of Parole. Building 65/66 houses a sixty-seven (67) bed treatment facility for OWI inmates sentenced by the Court. This program is licensed by the Iowa Department of Health, Division of Substance Abuse.

The Women's Residential Correctional Facility has been in operation since June, 1993. The Women's Residential Correctional Facility is a forty-eight bed facility housing female offenders. The facility accepts residents with varied legal status. Residents may be admitted to this facility as a condition of probation or parole, as a state work release resident, as an Operating While Intoxicated (OWI) offender, as a Federal resident or a resident on pretrial or jail transfer status. A wing of the facility houses women with their children. This innovative program is unique to Iowa. It allows eight women a maximum of two children under the age of five, to be with them while they do their residential correctional facility time. This wing of the facility opened in May, 1994.

Iowa Northern Railway Company is headquartered in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. It also has offices, repair and maintenance shops and yard facilities in Manly, Greene, and Waterloo. Iowa Northern Railway Company, was formed in 1984 following the liquidation of the assets of the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad Company. The line runs diagonally through Iowa from northwest to southeast from Manly to Cedar Rapids, Iowa and a branch line from Waterloo to Oelwein, Iowa. A group led by Dan Sabin took over management of the line in 1994. At that time the railroad handled 15, 000 revenue cars annually and the average track speed was under 10 mph. Traffic is now trending upward to 62, 000 revenue cars for 2009 and the average track speed is around 30 mph. The railroad has invested millions in bringing the line up to a state of good repair while increasing reliability and customer service.

Seek genetic counseling if there is a history of genetic disorders, or if you are over age 34. See your health care provider as soon as you become pregnant to set up a schedule for prenatal care. During this visit, discuss your risk factors. While you are pregnant, avoid smoking, drinking alcohol and taking any drugs, unless prescribed by a physician. Avoid chemicals in the workplace or at home. Avoid high temperatures, including hot baths, saunas or hot tubs.

Perinatal Center of Iowa (PCI) offers a complete spectrum of services for women who are pregnant or are considering becoming pregnant — including prenatal screenings, ultrasound services, genetic counseling, high-risk pregnancy management and inpatient care. While most pregnancies proceed normally, some require special care. This may be due to a special circumstance known in advance of pregnancy, such as when a mother has a pre-existing medical condition. Other complications with a pregnancy may be discovered during prenatal testing or during the course of the pregnancy.
