Houston Eye Associates was founded over 30 years ago. Many of the physicians who were founding members of Houston Eye Associates also taught medical residents at the University of Texas Medical School. Founding members included Charles Russo, M.D., Malcolm Mazow, M.D., Robert Stewart, M.D., Robert Wilkins, M.D., and Jeffrey Lanier, M.D. Their vision was to establish a comprehensive ophthalmology clinic that encompassed not only premium eye examinations, glasses, and contact lens care, but also incorporated all the possible sub-specialty areas of ophthalmology. At this time in the late 1960's, this idea was not commonly used as the model for physician clinics. Medicine, as it was practiced then, was not as sophisticated in its diagnostic capabilities as it is today. Many of today's standard diagnostic testing tools did not exist.

At Progressive EyeCare, cataract removal is performed through a procedure called phacoemulsification. In this procedure, high-energy ultrasound waves are used to gently remove your cataract. In most cases, we use only eye drop anesthesia, allowing our patients the fastest possible recovery. Once the cataract is removed, a permanent, artificial lens is inserted. It is not uncommon for our patients to have the benefit of dramatically improved vision within a few hours of their procedure.

Currently, there is no medical treatment available to reverse cataract formation, or even stop its progress. However, cataract surgery is available to help restore the patients vision. Cataract surgery involves removing the cloudy lens from the eye and replacing it with permanent intraocular lens implant. We now have available multifocal implants which correct the vision at both distance and near. Not all patient’s are a candidate for this implant, this will be determined at the time of your pre-op visit.
