Wal-Mart is a chain of huge department stores and warehouse stores founded by Sam Walton in 1962. This is the largest grocery retailing company in the U.S. The Wal-Mart headquarter is situated in Bentonville, Arkansas. Besides the grocery stores it also operates the Sam's Club retail warehouses in North America. Within five years after the opening of the first store the company expanded to 24 stores across Arkansas. One of the main reasons of its popularity today is that the store offers low prices. Wal-Mart took serious steps to open to a larger customer base by a more liberal merchandising strategy.

The first Wal-Mart store opened in Rogers, Arkansas in 1962. There were as many as 810 Discount Stores in the United States by the year of 2009. Wal-Mart Supercenters are hypermarkets that have in stock basically everything that a Wal-Mart Discount Store has, bud include a full-service supermarket, including meat and poultry, dairy products, garden produce, baked goods, delicatessen, frozen foods, and fresh seafood.

Wal-Mart had seen a rapid growth during the 1980s: in 1987 as many as 1, 198 stores were operating across the States. This was the year when the satellite network of the company was completed, thus all operating units were connected to the Bentonville office by two-way voice and data transmission and one-way video communication. In 1988, Sam Walton was replaced by David Glass but Walton remained as Chairman of the Board. This was when the first Walmart Supercenter opened in Washington, Missouri. In the 1990s, Toys "R" Us became independent from Wal-Mart and concentrated on toy sales. Later on the company opened overseas stores: in Argentina and Brazil in 1995, in Europe in 1999.

Wal-Mart made quickly became the biggest seller of organic milk and the biggest buyer of organic cotton in the world and managed to reduce packaging and energy costs. In March 2006 introduced a new Supercenter concept in Plano, Texas, in order to compete against stores considered more upscale and appealing. This new store has wider aisles, a coffee/sandwich shop, a sushi bar, free Wi-Fi Internet access, and more expensive goods. In 2007, Wal-Mart introduced a new slogan "Save Money Live Better, " which has replaced the "Always Low Prices, Always" slogan. This latter slogan had been used for the previous 19 years. In 2008 Walmart designed a new company logo, featuring the non-hyphenated name "Walmart" and in place of the star, a symbol that resembles a sunburst or flower.
