Studies indicate that approximately 24 to 44% of persons with epilepsy use CAM treatments. Epilepsy, as a disease, also is frequently more than just seizures- feelings of stress, anxiety, depression, cognitive problems, and headaches are very common. Because treatment with antiepileptic medication frequently does not address these symptoms, many persons with epilepsy seek relief with CAM therapies.

  • Surgery is a treatment option for select patients with epileptic seizures. In order to be a surgical candidate, all or most of the seizures should arise from a single part of the brain, and that part of the brain should have no important function (e.g. motor, sensory or speech activity). The goal of epilepsy surgery is to improve the quality of life of the patient that has not responded to epilepsy treatment with medications.

  • A learning disability is a persistent condition of presumed neurological dysfunction which may/may not exist with other disabling developmental and/or neurological conditions such as epilepsy for one. It refers to a varied group of disorders that is manifested as significant difficulties in the acquisition and use of listening, speaking, reading, spelling, writing, reasoning, or mathematical abilities. Oftentimes individuals with learning disorders struggle in academic areas in school and as a result, self-esteem and self-image can suffer.

  • Patients with epilepsy often experience difficulties in memory, attention, language, and executive functions (e.g., initiation, planning and organization) as a result of their seizures. Performing activities of daily living and working may be effortful as a result of cognitive difficulties. When these difficulties occur, cognitive rehabilitation may be recommended as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.

Other times the memory disturbance can actually be traced to a problem in another area of mental function. Neuropsychological testing is very helpful in determining this.

  • The First-Time Seizure Clinic provides rapid access to a specialist for patients who have just experienced their first-ever seizure. Typically, a patient will receive an office consultation with an epilepsy specialist within 72 hours after his or her seizure.

  • Emotional and psychosocial disturbances have often been linked with epilepsy. Early traditional medical approaches to epilepsy care focused solely on the seizures and their treatment. However, it is now widely recognized that concentrating only on the treatment of seizures is not enough. It is also critical to address the other issues that impact patients’ quality of life. This includes detecting and treating the psychological and social consequences of epilepsy.

  • Mood or affective disorders with depression can present as unipolar, bipolar, dysthymic or as an atypical depression, which can prove difficult to diagnose.
