There are different therapy options which are sometimes soley used or combined with other modes of treatment. Chemotherapy: Treatment which uses chemicals to disrupt rapidly dividing cells. Malignant cells can become vulnerable to intervention when they are in a state of replication. Chemotherapy's aim is to "catch" the abnormal cells in this vulnerable state and kill the uncontrolled growth of cancerous cells. These can be delivered through various modes with the most common being intravenous (IV) and oral (pills). Radiation Therapy: The use of radiation in various forms to destroy malignant cells and tissue. Radiation can be delivered externally or internally.

Northside Hospital was the first community hospital in Georgia to be designated by the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) as a qualified site to perform unrelated donor allogeneic bone marrow transplants and the only community hospital with an award winning comprehensive adult BMT center in Georgia. In addition, Northside Hospital is listed as a comprehensive transplant center with the Caitlin-Raymond International Bone Marrow Registry for national and international donor access. The Blood and Marrow Transplant Program offers: Autologous Stem Cell Transplants. Related and Unrelated Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplants. Haploidentical Stem Cell Transplants. Cord Blood Transplants. Nonmyeloablative / Reduced Intensity Stem Cell Transplants The BMT Program operates seven days a week, 24 hours a day, and provides patients with team-based care that includes psychologists, pharmacists, nutritionists, and physical therapists.

Southeast is continuing its committment to cancer care with the addition of a new, 49, 200 square foot Southeast Cancer Center on the Hospital's west campus in Cape Girardeau. Southeast's Hematology-Oncology clinical staff includes four Hematologist-Oncologists who offer the full range of chemotherapy and biotherapy treatments for cancer and blood disorders. Radiation Therapy is an important part of treatment for many cancer patients. Southeast's Radiation Therapy Department is among the state's finest, both in terms of personnel and technology. The clinical staff in Southeast’s Radiation Therapy Department includes a full-time in-house board certified radiation oncologist, as well a board certified Ph.D. medical physicist, a board eligible physicist, and a certified medical dosimetrist.
