The Physical Therapy Department at the Hutchinson Clinic treats clients with musculoskeletal, orthopedic, and neurological conditions upon physician referral. The department also accepts referral from non-Clinic physicians. The department is staffed by one full time Physical Therapist by the name of Mark Hall. Treatment programs are developed in consultation with physicians and may include physical modalities, therapeutic exercise instruction, work reconditioning programs, hydrotherapy, and home exercise instruction. Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center has come a long way since 1897, when the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Chambéry overcame near-impossible odds to open a two-room hospital in Hartford’s Asylum Hill neighborhood. The new hospital offered a refuge for immigrants who wanted to know that their faith and traditions would be understood and appreciated if they ever needed inpatient care. From the beginning, Saint Francis served on the front lines against outbreaks of then-deadly infectious diseases, from typhoid fever to influenza and later polio. At the same time, Saint Francis doctors were quick to recognize that improving health required more than clinical work, and the first research laboratory opened in 1902, the same year that tuberculosis was reaching epic proportions in Hartford and across the United States.

Computed Tomography (CT or “CAT” scan) uses a combination of x-rays and computerized reconstruction to produce images of the body in much greater detail than standard x-rays. All areas of the body can be evaluated with CT. San Diego Imaging has state-of-the-art CT scanners at both its Kearny Mesa and Chula Vista imaging centers, with multidetector technology that allows extremely fast scanning, thin slices for better resolution, and evaluation of blood vessels with CT angiography.

It can scan an organ in one second and capture a whole body image in ten seconds. This is more than twice as fast as the prior multi-slice CT scanners. This speed is especially helpful in shortening breath holds for geriatric and pediatric patients – and helps to deliver outstanding image quality and clear, highly detailed images. In addition to performing all traditional exams for oncology, neurology, and musculoskeletal applications, this scanner captures images of a beating heart in five heartbeats.
