Staffing seven major hospitals in the Mid-Atlantic Region, Radiology Associates anticipates continued demand for the services it provides. The group is committed to building on the traditions of service and technological innovation established by its founding pioneers. Since the early days when Wilhelm Roentgen discovered X-rays and of Dr. Talley, the founder of Radiology Associates of Richmond, radiology has become an increasingly powerful tool for both the diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions once considered almost beyond the reach of medicine. Continuing developments in computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and new interventional techniques are thresholds to the future of Radiology. Radiology Associates intends to be a part of that future, and continues to expand its staff with physicians qualified to use these new developments for the benefit of the patient.

Computed Tomography (CT or “CAT” scan) uses a combination of x-rays and computerized reconstruction to produce images of the body in much greater detail than standard x-rays. All areas of the body can be evaluated with CT. San Diego Imaging has state-of-the-art CT scanners at both its Kearny Mesa and Chula Vista imaging centers, with multidetector technology that allows extremely fast scanning, thin slices for better resolution, and evaluation of blood vessels with CT angiography.
-
The equipment and professional expertise available at San Diego Imaging provides patients with the latest scanning technology of the heart and coronary arteries available. Coronary CT angiography (CCTA) is a non-invasive test that allows visualization of the coronary arteries. In addition to identifying luminal stenosis, the walls of the coronary arteries can also be assessed for the presence of intramural plaque, which often precedes the development of actual luminal narrowing. This makes CCTA an ideal tool in the evaluation of pre-clinical coronary artery disease.
-
Our Kearny Mesa imaging center has the brand new LightSpeed VCT. This is the world’s first and fastest volume CT system. It can scan an organ in one second and capture a whole body image in ten seconds. This is more than twice as fast as the prior multi-slice CT scanners. This speed is especially helpful in shortening breath holds for geriatric and pediatric patients – and helps to deliver outstanding image quality and clear, highly detailed images. In addition to performing all traditional exams for oncology, neurology, and musculoskeletal applications, this scanner captures images of a beating heart in five heartbeats. In less than 7 seconds, this scanner can produce clear, highly detailed images of the heart, coronary arteries, cerebrovascular system, and peripheral arteries.

The goal of mammography and breast imaging is early detection and treatment of breast cancer, which in turn leads to high cancer survival rates. Most major organizations, including the American Cancer Society, recommend that women 40 and over receive a mammogram every year, in addition to breast self-examination and physician evaluation.
-
Today, many catheter angiographic studies have been replaced by less invasive methods, such as Computed Tomography Angiography (CTA) that does not require that a catheter be inserted.
-
Fluoroscopy is the examination of the tissues and deep structures of the body using the fluoroscope, which projects radiographic (x-ray) images in a movie-like sequence onto a screen monitor.
-
Mammography is an excellent way to detect breast abnormalities, but in many cases it is not possible to tell from the imaging studies alone whether a growth is benign or cancerous. To make this determination it is necessary to obtain a tissue sample for microscopic examination. As an alternative to open surgical biopsy, which removes an entire breast lump for microscopic analysis, a hollow needle may be passed through the skin into the suspicious lesion with the help of special x-rays. The small sample of breast tissue obtained in this way can show whether the lesion is malignant or benign, and the procedure is much less invasive than the surgical approach. A special computerized mammography machine uses intersecting coordinates to pinpoint the area of tissue change. This method is called stereotactic biopsy or x-ray-guided biopsy.
-
Radiography involves exposing a part of the body to a small dose of radiationto produce an image of the internal organs. When x-rays penetrate the body, they are absorbed in varying amounts by different tissues.

SAN DIEGO IMAGING AT SHARP MEMORIAL OUTPATIENT PAVILION
CA, 92123 SAN DIEGO, 3075 HEALTH CENTER DRIVE
Today, doctors are better able to detect and treat bone loss in its earliest stages. This can help prevent the disease or lessen its impact. Also, several drug therapies now on the market have been shown to be effective in slowing down or reversing the bone-loss process. Just as no physician would prescribe a medication for high blood pressure without first taking the patient’s blood pressure, the diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis should begin with an objective measurement of your current bone status.

The NeuroMedical Center Surgical Hospital is a physician-owned hospital, and when physicians are directly involved in every aspect of the delivery of healthcare, patients distinctly benefit. The Federal government reported that structural measures of quality, such as staff specialization, clinical staff per patient, and complication rates, all suggested good performance on the part of physician-owned hospitals and demonstrated very high quality of care.
