The New York Circle of Translators (NYCT), which began in 1979 as a small group of dinner companions, has become a New York State not-for-profit corporation with several hundred members. It is governed by a set of Bylaws which regulate the internal affairs of the association. Our members are independent translators and interpreters as well as companies and organizations. NYCT is a chapter of the American Translators Association (ATA) which is, in turn, an affiliate of the International Federation of Translators (FIT). NYCT members work in a variety of languages and specialties in industry, law, finance, commerce, the arts and academia. Our translators and interpreters are committed to the exchange of ideas and mutual support. Another goal is to educate the general public about the professional nature of interpreting and translating.

The very first newspaper in Santa Rosa, the parent of today's Press Democrat, was begun in 1857, just three years after Santa Rosa was chosen as the seat of Sonoma County and seven years after California became a part of the United States. Called the Sonoma Democrat this newspaper was a four-page weekly. Its name reflected the politics of the Santa Rosa and Russian River valleys, which were settled in the 1840s and '50s by farmers from Missouri, Kentucky and Tennessee. The founding publisher was Alpheus Russell, a merchant with some newspaper experience who came to open a general store on Third Street. John Taylor, a prosperous rancher south of the new town, encouraged Russell to establish the paper, giving him a five-dollar gold piece for the first subscription.

Mercy Family Center, a multidisciplinary outpatient mental health clinic for children, adolescents, and their families, opened its doors on October 5, 1992 on a budget of $60, 000 and a staff of three. As Sr. Sarah so accurately recognized, there was a tremendous need for quality mental health services in the New Orleans area and Mercy Family Center quickly surpassed its goal of serving 200-300 families per year. From the very beginning, Mercy Family Center provided quality assessment and intervention services that are accessible to people of all income levels. The staff recognized that the individual is part of the larger framework of family, neighborhood, school and community. As a result, both individual and family goals are addressed within these overlapping systems. Treatment approaches emphasize behavior change, problem-solving and promotion of self-esteem for the individual and the family.
