Epilepsy, like most long term or chronic disorders, can subject the patient to emotional distress, including personal and social difficulties and adjustment issues. Furthermore, there can be changes in mood dependant on seizure activity as well as electrical discharges may affect brain structures that control emotion.

Depression is the most frequent psychiatric disorder seen in epilepsy. Prevalence is estimated to be from 20-60% among patients followed in tertiary (specialized epilepsy) centers. Moreover, there is a higher incidence of depression among epileptic patients than the general population or even others with chronic medical conditions. The risk of suicide is higher in patients with epilepsy who are also depressed. Death by suicide occurs in 5% of patients with epilepsy compared to 1.4% in the general population. There is also evidence that suicide occurs at a higher frequency in patients who suffer from temporal lobe epilepsy.

Epilepsy is often co-morbid (co-occurring) with psychiatric conditions such as mood disorders which include major depressive or bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders such as obsessive-compulsive disorder or panic disorder, ADHD, sleep disorders, and at times, substance abuse and psychosis. Moreover, some anti-epileptic medications can induce cognitive impairment or mood disorders.

The Northeast Regional Epilepsy Group offers a full range of diagnostic services necessary to provide comprehensive care for each and every patient with a known or suspected seizure disorder. Routine EEG, Ambulatory EEG, Video-EEG, Cognitive services, Neuroimaging. Clinical neuropsychology assesses brain functioning through standardized behavioral tests and observation. Intelligence, memory, language, attention and concentration, and other mental activities are assessed. This evaluation can be part of a pre-surgical or post-surgical epilepsy work-up, to test a patient’s reported problems with thinking, or to diagnose dementia, an attention deficit disorder, or a learning disability, among others.

The Northeast Regional Epilepsy Group provides epilepsy consultations on any hospitalized patient with a known or suspected seizure disorder. Consultation requests must come from the treating physician, typically a neurologist. Consultations are provided within 24 hours of the request, and often on the same day, and are tailored toward the individual patient. Diagnostic opinions are provided along with any appropriate recommendations for additional investigations and treatment options. If appropriate, longer term care is provided both during the hospitalization and after discharge.

The WADA test, named after Dr. Jun Wada who first described and implemented the test, was originally designed to determine what side of the brain predominantly held speech and language. Its purpose has expanded to include a test of memory localization as well. The WADA test (now also referred to as the Intracarotid Amobarbital Procedure or IAP) is a minimally invasive study that is performed along with an angiogram; it is a “same-day” procedure (the patient arrives at the hospital in the morning and leaves later in the day). First a routine cerebral angiogram is performed to view the cerebral circulation (arteries and veins).
