The first Junior League was founded in 1901 by a 19-year-old New York City college student, Mary Harriman. Moved by the suffering she saw all around her, Harriman mobilized a group of 80 other young women to work at a settlement house in lower Manhattan. The Junior League idea spread rapidly across the country, and by 1921 more than 40 Leagues joined together to form the Association of Junior Leagues. In 1925, Mrs. Lawrence F. Tucker, with ten charter members, formed the Junior League of Norfolk, and their first community service was providing transportation to city agencies. The Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach, Inc. (JLNVB), has provided hundreds of thousands of dollars in direct grants to various community organizations, ranging from the cultural (Academy of Music), to the educational (Literacy Project PALS), to social welfare (ForKids, Inc.).

The State Treasurer is responsible for administration of the Local Government Investment Pool. Unobligated funds from participating local governments are pooled with state funds and invested by the State of Wisconsin Investment Board. Funds deposited in the pool are available for withdrawal on one day's notice and without penalty on interest earnings. Interest, less administrative expenses, is credited to the local government accounts monthly. Average daily balance in the pool now exceeds $3.1 billion. Investments of excess funds are made by the State of Wisconsin Investment Board. The Investment Board is authorized to invest in United States direct and agency issues of no more than 10-year maturity, commercial paper of highest rating by two rating firms, and banker acceptances and certificates of deposit of banks with capital of more than $500 million. Approximately 130 head of Braunvieh were imported into the United States from Switzerland between 1869 and 1880. This was the basis for the development of the American Brown Swiss that was declared a dairy breed in 1890, and therefore became a different breed. American Brown Swiss have since spread to Canada, Mexico and throughout the world including Switzerland. In the mid-nineteen hundreds, Original Braunviehs were imported by Mexico where they have flourished as a beef breed. In Mexico, they are used in a commercial capacity to upgrade the beef characteristics of the indigenous Zebu cattle. There, separate herdbooks are kept for the cattle, sometimes referred to as European type Brown Swiss and American Brown Swiss.

At its inception, RadNet provided billing and administrative services to radiology groups in the Los Angeles area, and opened its first imaging center across from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in 1981. In 1990, Dr. Berger and Dr. Michael Krane, our Director of Utilization Management, purchased the interests of their four other partners, and became the sole owners of RadNet. In June 1992, RadNet was acquired by Primedex Health Systems, Inc., a publicly traded company that, at the time, was engaged in providing management, administrative and financial services to medical clinics focused on workers compensation claimants in the greater Los Angeles area.

The Public Museum in Grand Rapids, Michigan was founded by a group of civic leaders in 1854 as the Grand Rapids Lyceum of Natural History and in 1868 merged with the Grand Rapids Scientific Club to form the Kent Scientific Institute and Museum. Over the next century, the Museum established itself as a premier educational institution in the area, and continues in to fulfill this role for West Michigan today. A portion of the current Habitats exhibit on the Van Andel Museum Center’s third floor is dedicated to a recreation of the early days of the Museum, and illustrates the changing attitudes about collections-based education and interpretation.
