Wal-Mart had seen a rapid growth during the 1980s: in 1987 as many as 1, 198 stores were operating across the States. This was the year when the satellite network of the company was completed, thus all operating units were connected to the Bentonville office by two-way voice and data transmission and one-way video communication. In 1988, Sam Walton was replaced by David Glass but Walton remained as Chairman of the Board. This was when the first Walmart Supercenter opened in Washington, Missouri. In the 1990s, Toys "R" Us became independent from Wal-Mart and concentrated on toy sales. Later on the company opened overseas stores: in Argentina and Brazil in 1995, in Europe in 1999.

The core of the Walmart operation is logistics-we get millions of products to our store shelves every day so during this process we need some of the latest environmentally-sustainable methods. The first thing we need is some distribution centers. We have 40 large Regional Distribution Centers all over the United States. These facilities operate 24 hours a day to keep the business rolling.
