The Conservancy protects specific places where plant and animal species can survive for generations to come. Science guides our work by identifying Earth’s most important natural places. Using innovative tools, we work to protect and restore these priority sites. We call these areas the Last Great Places. We manage preserves throughout the state. At each place, we employ a range of strategies tailored to local circumstances. We buy land. We help other landowners manage their properties. We facilitate public-private partnerships. We engage the business community. We collaborate with like-minded partners. We seek pragmatic solutions.

One of the most biologically diverse states in the nation, Texas is rich in natural treasures. Yet, the Lone Star State is losing its undeveloped land faster than any other state in the United States. With a commitment to conserving Texas’ native animals, plants and landscapes that began in 1964, The Nature Conservancy now owns more than 30 Texas nature preserves and conservation properties and assists private landowners to conserve their land through more than 100 voluntary land-preservation agreements. With public and private partners, we have protected 750, 000 acres in Texas. We work collaboratively with landowners, businesses, institutions, government agencies, communities, individuals and other non-profit organizations. Together, we seek non-confrontational, pragmatic, market-based solutions to conservation challenges.

We are all connected: We are people whose hearts have been captivated by our state’s forest, water, and shoreline, and our history has been shaped and dominated by them. We belong to a state that provides breathtaking beauty, working lands that sustain us, and a rich culture defined by our relationship with the land and water. The Nature Conservancy in Michigan is committed to working with partners who share common conservation vision and values. We have to, as our collective responsibility to achieve the protection of our natural legacy is profound. We cannot achieve this conservation vision alone—partners, communities, community leaders and other organizations will be essential. For many landscapes identified as conservation priorities, our partners are better positioned to carry conservation forward, and our best role may be to ensure that they have our support and the needed resources to take conservation action.

Office Hours: 8:00am - 5:00pm Monday - Friday. In 1968, Tom Hackett as Business Manager for IBEW and George Seaman as Chapter Manager for NECA negotiated for electrical construction employers to contribute 35¢ an hour into a pension plan for IBEW Local 1547 members. Not all members were happy about this at the time — many wanted to keep the money on their checks, and a vote was required. Julius Kornfeind, Ike Waldrop and others lobbied extensively for the plan, and the membership voted it in. Pattye Taylor (formerly Pattye Anderson) cut the first monthly pension check for $131.96 in 1969 to Verne McCain, our first retiree. Today, the Trust pays over $6, 600, 000 a month in retirement benefits to over 3, 000 retirees and beneficiaries. As it turns out, the early leaders were visionaries, constructing a plan that has grown in 30 years to become one of the best in the country.
