AbilityFirst’s Newport Mesa Center in Costa Mesa offers after-school enrichment programs for children with developmental disabilities, such as autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, and epilepsy. The center serves the cities of Costa Mesa and Newport Beach and their surrounding communities. Established in 1999, the center includes two modular classrooms and a playground.

Kids, teens and adults with mild to severe physical and developmental disabilities come to Camp Paivika in the summer and winter for horseback riding, swimming, adaptive sports, campfires and cookouts, arts and crafts, performing arts and other enjoyable, enriched activities. With a sense of freedom inspired by time spent outdoors in natural surroundings, campers learn, develop new interests and confidence through guided play, social skills building and exploration. Opportunities for socialization are built into every program and activity. Many participants come to Camp Paivika year after year, making memories and forming lasting bonds of friendship with fellow campers and staff. AbilityFirst provides programs and services to help children and adults with physical and developmental disabilities reach their full potential throughout their lives. We offer a broad range of employment, recreational and socialization programs and operate 12 accessible residential housing complexes. When our organization was founded, the name reflected the thinking and norms of the time. The ensuing decades, however, brought dramatic change. We expanded to provide programs for adults, as well as children. We also broadened our mission in order to meet the needs of those with developmental disabilities, as well as those with physical disabilities. Development disabilities include autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, and epilepsy.

The Phoenix MEPS is one of a network of 65 MEPS located nationwide and in Puerto Rico. Prior to July 1983, the Phoenix MEPS, or AFEES, was located downtown Phoenix. In July 1983, it was relocated to a national historical site. The new location was the Monroe School building, 215 N. 7th St. The tall columns supporting the front of the building and the rustic wood and glass entrance etched a lasting impression upon everyone who entered. On 12 June 1998, the Phoenix MEPS moved to its present location at 1 North First Street, in the heart of downtown Phoenix. Our new facility is directly across the street from America West Arena, home of the Phoenix Suns, Mercury and Coyotes and is 3 blocks away from Bank One Ballpark, home of the Arizona Diamondbacks. In addition to nearby sporting facilities, the Civic Plaza and Arizona Center are just a short walk away.

Soldiers may step down to our partial hospitalization program to assist with transitioning back to their duty stations.
