Nurse Practitioners of Idaho (NPI) formed as an independent membership group in 1999, separating from the long standing NP conference group of the Idaho Nurses Association. NPI, an affiliate organization of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, is the professional organization for nurse practitioners in Idaho. NPI is the primary resource for continuing education of nurse practitioners and provides an annual educational conference to meet ongoing continuing and pharmacology education for the NP.

Epilepsy, like most long term or chronic disorders, can subject the patient to emotional distress, including personal and social difficulties and adjustment issues. Furthermore, there can be changes in mood dependant on seizure activity as well as electrical discharges may affect brain structures that control emotion.

Depression is the most frequent psychiatric disorder seen in epilepsy. Prevalence is estimated to be from 20-60% among patients followed in tertiary (specialized epilepsy) centers. Moreover, there is a higher incidence of depression among epileptic patients than the general population or even others with chronic medical conditions. The risk of suicide is higher in patients with epilepsy who are also depressed. Death by suicide occurs in 5% of patients with epilepsy compared to 1.4% in the general population. There is also evidence that suicide occurs at a higher frequency in patients who suffer from temporal lobe epilepsy.

The Northeast Regional Epilepsy Group offers its patients a six-week group program that focuses on learning about memory processes and providing training in use of compensatory strategies for improvement of memory functions in everyday life. The focus of the group is on compensatory strategies rather than rehabilitation, per se.

Neuropsychological evaluation is usually recommended for patients with Parkinson’s disease when questions regarding weaknesses in cognitive functioning are presented by the individual, a family member, and/or their neurologist. At the Northeast Regional Epilepsy Group, evaluations assessing the level of severity of cognitive difficulty in individuals with Parkinson’s disease are provided.
