Lightweight Concrete refers to concrete with a density of 90-115 lb/ft³ compared to normal weight concrete of 140 - 150 lb/ft³. High Performance Concrete (HPC) refers to concrete with a specified compression strength of 6, 000 psi (40 MPa) and greater. Flowable Fill is a high slump, low strength concrete used primarily to replace compacted granular material. Self Consolidating Concrete is a highly workable concrete mixture that can be placed in restricted structural elements by means of its own weight with no vibration. Architectural Concrete refers to the combination of decorative or aesthetic applications with structural fabrication. Post-tensioning applications combine the high compressive characteristics of concrete with the tensile strength of steel to increase overall strength and durability. Prairie can mix concrete with many different characteristics to provide specific service and finished qualities to match the specified application.

effective construction materials available. With a world wide production rate of 5 billion cubic tons per year, it is the second most consumed substance on earth after water. The U.S. alone uses about 340 million cubic yards (260 million cubic meters) of ready-mixed concrete each year. It is used in highways, streets, parking lots, parking garages, bridges, high-rise buildings, dams, homes, floors, sidewalks, driveways, and numerous other applications. Concrete has no intrinsic form and its ultimate shape and texture is dictated by the formwork into which it is poured. As a result, finished concrete can assume almost any color, shape or texture. This versatility gives concrete designers and contractors a medium with unlimited potential.

Concrete is quickly becoming one of the building materials of choice for residential, commercial and industrial construction. The flexibility of design in color and texture, the durability and strength of the structures, the energy savings over the life of the building, and the reduced cost of quicker construction using early strength concrete are all factors that require a closer look at concrete as a building material. Architects and engineers in partnership with a creative and dedicated concrete provider can harness concrete’s versatility, strength and unlimited potential to create structures of lasting function and beauty.

With more than one-third of the nation’s 582, 000 bridges considered to be deficient, any new or reconstructed structures require durability and low maintenance. High performance concrete bridges offer cost efficiencies, time savings and twice the lifespan of conventionally built bridges. Concrete provides the owner, engineer, and contractor many advantages over other materials: Aesthetics -- Dynamic, graceful, long-span bridges often become symbols of a city's hope for the future, even a tourist attraction, and, ultimately, encourage economic development. Cost-savings -- From reduced initial construction costs to lower maintenance costs, structures built with concrete are economical. Competitiveness -- the value of concrete is repeatedly recognized in competitive bidding situations. Durability -- Bridges built with high performance concrete (HPC) can have a service life of 100 years.

Concrete is the premiere material for pavements. Whether it’s city streets, parking lots, interstate highways or runways and aprons at the airport, concrete pavement is able to handle the load. Prairie Material provides quality concrete for any paving project. Concrete has many qualities that make it ideal for pavements: Durability - Concrete pavements can be designed to last from 10 to 50 years, depending upon the system needs. In fact, Wacker Drive in Chicago has been designed to last 100 years. Versatility - Concrete pavement can be designed to handle loads from lightly trafficked suburban streets and sidewalks to runways that support 850, 000 pound aircraft. Concrete supports heavy loads with less deformation than asphalt. Cost Effectiveness - Concrete roads’ long life span, combined with minimum maintenance requirements, create great long term value.

Fast Construction - Fast-track paving techniques using high-early-strength concrete mix allows a road to reopen in as few as 12 hours. This is especially helpful for city street paving because it reduces the traffic restriction time on busy urban routes. Ideal for Asphalt Rehabilitation - Whitetopping is a cost-effective method of rehabbing old pavements by placing a thin layer of high-strength, fiber-reinforced concrete over prepared asphalt.

Concrete buildings are cost effective, durable and allow for great flexibility in design and construction. Maximizes Space Because the depth of a concrete frame is shallower than a steel structure, a concrete building has lower floor-to-floor heights. Structural concrete provides more floors than a steel building of the same height. For buildings taller than five stories, this reduction in floor-to-floor height translates into one additional floor of occupied space for every five floors. Sound- and Vibration-Proof Concrete buildings have excellent acoustics. In standardized tests of sound absorption, transmission, and isolation, concrete receives high ratings because of its density. The high density of concrete also resists vibration and electrical interference—prime considerations for today's highly computerized and networked office environment.

Building with Concrete There are a number of ways to build a concrete home. Concrete Masonry Units. New types of concrete block, advances in rigid foam insulation, and advances in construction methods have combined to provide concrete block building systems that cost-effectively compare with traditional frame building methods. Autoclaved Aerated Concrete. Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC) is made with all fine aggregates (nothing more coarse than a grain of sand), cement and a natural expansion agent that causes the concrete to rise like bread dough, with countless small air pockets. In fact, this concrete is 80% air. The factory can mold it and cut it into precisely dimensioned units. Radiant Heating One major advantage of using a concrete floor system is that you can easily install a radiant heating system - one of the most efficient ways of heating a home.

High Performance Concrete (HPC) refers to concrete with a specified compression strength of 6, 000 psi (40 MPa) and greater. In fact, Prairie has had great success with HPC mix designs at upwards of 21, 000 psi. HPC can be specified for a number of applications: The most common use of high-strength concrete is for construction of high-rise buildings. At 969 ft, Chicago's 311 South Wacker Drive uses concrete with compressive strengths up to 12, 000 psi (41 MPa) and is the tallest concrete building in the United States. To put concrete into service earlier, such as opening pavement to traffic in three days. To reduce the column size and increase usable space in high-rise buildings. To build the superstructures of long span bridges and the durability of bridge decks. To satisfy specific needs such as durability, modulus of elasticity, and flexural strength for special applications. These include parking garages, dams, grandstand roofs, etc.
