Part of the mission of Sutter Gould Medical Foundation is to enhance the quality of life and advance medicine through medical research. Our Clinical Research Department, in conjunction with Gould physicians, conducts a variety of medical research projects to help us achieve that goal. Since 1978, our physicians, staff and patients have participated in studies including hypertension, irritable bowel syndrome, diabetes, cancer, congestive heart failure and many others. Many studies conducted at Sutter Gould are initiated by pharmaceutical companies testing new medications. All Sutter Gould research studies are controlled under the Food and Drug Administration and Department of Health and Human Services regulations. These agencies monitor the studies for safety, ethics, and scientific standards. Patients who participate in Sutter Gould studies do so on a voluntary basis.

In 1989, Research!America's founders came together with the realization that there was a vast deficiency in medical research funding — and that such a gap would be detrimental to Americans for years to come. Through their mutual belief in the fundamental importance of medical research, these visionaries formed the Research!America alliance. 1989: Research!America is formed with former Senator Lowell Weicker as president and CEO—and Edwin C. "Jack" Whitehead, founder of MIT's Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research as founder and board chair. Other founders were Theodore Cooper, MD, then chairman and CEO of Upjohn Co., and medical research advocate Mary W. Lasker. 1990: Mary Woolley is named president of Research!America. The Orthopaedic Research Institute has extensive facilities for the testing and evaluation of materials, devices, instruments and components. Evaluations are conducted as “bench top” (mechanical) tests and performance evaluation including tests in simulated biological and atmospheric environments and human cadaver testing. Consumer/user acceptance and focus group evaluations can also be conducted. In addition, these testing modalities are backed up with state of the art computational engineering design and analysis capabilities.
