STAND was started in December of 1996 by a diverse, educated group of parents and attorneys who recognized that children with disabilities are misunderstood in the community, by both education professionals and lay persons alike. Opportunities to obtain appropriate education for children who are differently abled can mean the difference between independence and dependence as adults. Recognizing the educational needs of children with disabilities will make a lifetime of difference. STAND's purpose it to inform the families of children with disabilities of their rights. Our highly trained staff joins residents in their moment, rather than trying to bring them into our reality. Through this approach, we recognize individuality, encourage choices and help residents maintain their dignity. We also work diligently to get to know each resident and his or her family, so that we can offer the right support for every stage of the disease process. At many of our communities, residents are involved in all kinds of charitable activities, from making dolls to send to children in Iraq to organizing fund-raisers to support needy families in the area. Many receive awards for their charitable efforts, as well as for individual achievements. For example, one of our residents was recently honored for his service to our country during World War II. In addition, many groups from the surrounding neighborhoods generously give their time to entertain and help residents.

If you're looking for one community that you can call home, no matter how your health needs may change, you've come to the right place. In several states, we offer "continuing care retirement living communities, " in which you can move freely between retirement living, assisted living, nursing home care and even Alzheimer's and Dementia care based on your changing needs at any point in time. So you can remain in the same familiar and comforting environment even if you should require extensive assistance. Some call it "aging in place." We think of it as a flexible senior living arrangement that offers the security of long-range planning, while making sure our retirement living and assisted living residents can maintain their independence for as long as they are able.

Our staff, our residents, and their families and friends are all equally important members of the Emeritus team.
